Site Visit: Fusion energy at the UK Atomic Energy Authority – Culham Campus

In a world where cleaner energy is vital, fusion has long been seen as the Holy Grail. It’s low-carbon, safe and has almost limitless fuel – but developing it is technically challenging. Fusion is now moving from laboratory experiments towards full-scale demonstration plants, and insurance for the future commercial power industry is becoming a hot topic.

Join us to explore one of the world’s leading fusion research sites at Culham Campus, near Oxford. The campus is operated by the UK Atomic Energy Authority, which runs Britain’s national fusion programme. During the visit you will get to see two fusion research facilities on guided tours:

JET, until recently the most powerful fusion machine in operation – now entering a pioneering decommissioning programme that will inform the design of future powerplants;

Remote Applications in Challenging Environments (RACE) centre – developing robotic maintenance technology for fusion alongside other industries where human access is difficult, from nuclear to space.

You will also hear talks from experts covering fusion energy, the plan for commercialising it, and the risk and insurance aspects that will need to be considered as the industry grows.

Those joining this site visit will need to provide their country of residence, nationality & have a photo ID with them on the day.
